Welcome to Iona Handcrafted Books... a tiny bookbinding studio in Seattle, Washington, specializing in creating books by hand, using centuries-old techniques. All of my books are created with a traditional Italian design that I learned in Venice in 1993. Because of their time-tested design and materials, these books are made for adventure! I use archival, acid-free papers that ensure that my journals are going to be around for the long haul.
As an eco-minded studio, I eagerly source earth-friendly leathers and papers, and use repurposed antique hardware pieces as closure mechanisms in my Signature line. I strive to be as gentle on the environment as possible, and hope to fuel your heart with inspiration. Welcome. I'm so glad you're here.
A little bit of history...
Centuries ago, monks roamed the streets of Italy with small books called "vade mecum" (Latin for "to go with me"). Since 1994, Iona has brought this Italian treasure to wanderers and wonderers of our time...placing many thousands of our books in the hands of artists, musicians, writers, architects, poets, photographers, backpackers, collectors, and all sorts of fascinating people with something to say, or to save, in a meticulously crafted archival book...people just like you.
